The Greatest Silence
by Lisa Jackson 76 minutes subtitled, Congo
Since the late 1990s, more people have died in war-torn Congo than in any conflict since World War II. In addition to the dead, hundreds of thousands of woman and girls have been raped. Rape, is a weapon of war, part of a destabilization covering the theft of valuable minerals. Rape victims are traumatized, injured, abandoned by husbands, pregnant, and ravaged by disease. Lisa Jackson, herself a sexual-assault victim, interview soldiers who rape seemingly routinely; she asks them why. In Bakuva, (east Congo), we meet women and children, a doctor, a policewoman, and a government minister. They comment. There is no end in sight.

As a benefit for Ki Research Institute we proudly present Akira Kurosawa's fully restored action masterpiece SEVEN SAMURAI (1954, 203 minutes). The Ki Research Institute's (KRI) mission is to educate the public in the principles of coordination of Mind & Body. These principles include changing our reactions to problems, conflict or aggression by using relaxation and centered action. Teaching these principles to people incarcerated in jails, to police officers, to parents, teachers, and all who lead stressful lives, will hopefully improve how we react to one another, and in turn, reduce conflict in our community. KRI provides programs to the City of Richmond and Albany as well as host workshops locally and nationally. Please visit http://www.kionline.org/ for more information.

Zulu Love Letter
100 minutes, South Africa, in English and Zulu with English subtitles, South African, Director/Producer: Ramadan Suleman

A hot-blooded drama decrying the way South Africans have repressed the years of apartheid.” - Variety

In this richly evocative and compelling film, the director imaginatively picks through the director imaginatively picks through the haunting, psychic debris of South Africa’s political history. Juxtaposing personal and national struggles, past and present, loss and recovery emotional distances and bridges, trauma and healing, this unsparing exploration of history’s often hidden recesses embody women’s experiences as well as tenacious spirit and, remarkably, offer an intricate tapestry of hope.” -Jude G. Akudinobi, University of California.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission could not heal all the wounds left behind by the apartheid era. Thandeka, a journalist, is still traumatized by the murder of a schoolgirl, which she witnessed years before. She can find no peace before tracking down the perpetrators and finding the body of the schoolgirl so it can have a decent memorial

THRILLVILLE'S SUGAR 'N' SPICE GRINDHOUSE DOUBLE FEATURE:
SUGAR BOXX with ISLE OF THE DAMNED

SEE!

A new 70s Women In Prison classic with a new "lost" 80s Italian cannibal movie on one freaky, feisty, funky, flesh-feasting double thrill-bill!
SUGAR BOXX
Florida everglades. 1975. Reporter Valerie March uncovers a horrifying story - innocent girls, wrongly convicted on drug charges and sentenced to the notorious Sugar State Women's Work Camp. Posing as a hooker, Valerie gets busted and goes into the prison undercover. That's when her nightmare begins. Sugar State is a powder keg of violence, racism, and abuse. Girls assigned to the 'Camp' slave all day in the fields, living in a swampy hellhole of catfights and gang rape. Girls assigned to the 'Ranch' are 'turned out' by the Warden as sex slaves for local politicians and businessmen, all hot for a new piece of 'gator-tail' to nail. After surviving knife fights, rape, whippings, the 'hot box', disfiguration and the death of a friend, Valerie blows the whistle. The State Police arrive just in time to rescue her and take over the prison... but justice is not served. No charges are filed and Valerie's story is buried under a mountain of good-ol-boy politics and corruption.Enraged, Valerie sets out on a rampage of revenge. Aided by former inmate Loretta Sims, she assembles a rag-tag band of ex-inmates, ex-guards, pimps, and hookers. Machetes in hand, the group stages a nighttime raid that ignites a bloody free-for-all prison riot. Valerie and Loretta slice their way through the madness, literally hacking their former captors apart and savagely brutalizing those who once tortured and maimed them.

AND!

ISLE OF THE DAMNED
In Antonello Giallo's follow up to the notorious Pleasures of the Damned, private investigator Jack Steele is hired by a mysterious treasure hunter to help find the lost treasure of Marco Polo. Along for the trip is Jack's adopted son, Billy. Their search brings them to an island off the coast of Argentina... and into the clutches of a primitive cannibal tribe, the Yamma Yamma. Alexis Kinkaid, a mysterious recluse who has made his home on the island amongst the cannibals, may hold the key to unlocking the island's secret... if they don't end up in the belly of a savage first! Isle of the Damned, shot on location in Argentina in 1980, brought Giallo under fire yet again... this time by the Argentinean government, who issued a warrant for Giallo's arrest under suspicions of abuse of the native peoples. Giallo fled the country before he could go to trial. The film has been long out of print, but is presented here in a digitally remastered form.

The El Cerrito Green Party presents
HEALTH, MONEY AND FEAR
Our Health Care System is beyond broken or sick. It's dumb. We spend more than twice as much per capita than most developed countries, the taxpayer is already paying for 60% of the total bill, and, by any measure of public health, our results are poor. Driven by technology and fear of liability, physicians order tests and treatments without regard for cost. Patients and families embrace unreasonable expectations. Drug companies successfully market expensive drugs that, at best, are marginally more effective than less expensive, older ones. As our primary care providers continue to disappear, increasing fragmentation of care, costs will rise and outcomes will worsen. Most significantly, the insurance industry adds nothing to "health" and greatly to total cost, which is increasingly a burden to our economy and threat to the financial solvency of our government. What's more, our State government are having to divert money to health care from education, infrastructure and protecting the environment, all of which may have more impact on the health of our society than access to a doctor. Achieving "Universal Access", which is a moral imperative, without focusing on controling cost is a prescription for disaster. There are many lawmakers in powerful positions who understand this, but cower to the "political wisdom" that voters don't want single payer and the lobbyists will defeat them in the next round of elections if they speak their truth. WE need to inform the public and educate our politicians so they will show real leadership to transform our health care system in a postive manner. Our health care system should be more about health and less about money. Instead of chaos, driven by profits, Somebody needs to be in charge of making sure we are getting the most health and the least suffering for our public health care dollars. Our health care system should be more about health and less about profits.
